In response to a call from the Iraqi heritage authorities, four international teams of archaeologists (among the 200 who have arrived in Iraq over the last 5 years) are back after a 30-year absence from the legendary sites of Larsa, Lagash, Nineveh and Khorsabad in Mesopotamia. Their first mission is to salvage whatever can be salvaged, while assessing the structures still buried underground that need to be quickly protected. Over 5,000 years ago, people built the first cities in history here, before becoming the world's first megacities 3,000 years later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
