This fifth edition of the Festival was all about intensity, conviviality and exchange. The Festival was packed almost every night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3 theme evenings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Three evenings were hosted by invited guests: Charles Bonnet, whose discovery of the Black Pharaohs is the crowning achievement of an exemplary career, hosted the March 21 evening dedicated to archaeology in Sudan<\/strong>. St\u00e9phane Go\u00ebl's film about his team's research in Kerma was a big hit with the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jean-Claude Margueron, who with his team has brought to life the extraordinary Mesopotamian city of Mari in present-day Syria, hosted the Friday evening event on March 23 dedicated to the Middle East<\/strong>. In particular, his speech showed the extent to which research can come up against difficulties that are not the province of science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The evening of Thursday, March 22 was devoted to the the problem of looting archaeological sites in connection with the antique art market<\/strong>. Thanks to Gilbert Kaenel, the Festival was finally able to tackle a subject which, while fundamental to the future of archaeology, is a delicate one and clearly not a matter for science alone. Economic and political interests reign supreme in this field, and specialists are all too often helpless in the face of the weight of the networks involved in the trade in looted objects. This is poignantly illustrated by the film \"Alerte au pillage des royaumes de Saba\". However, as the film \"Effacer la m\u00e9moire\" (Erase the Memory) shows, it's not only scientists who are alarmed and dismayed by these problems, since large sections of the population can be made aware of the need to conserve and enhance their cultural heritage. The jury has chosen this theme as the common thread running through its work, and its prize list clearly reflects this stance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The collaboration with Eric Huysecom, President of the Cercle genevois d'arch\u00e9ologie, and lecturer in the Anthropology Department at the University of Geneva, continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
