The looting of archaeological sites: an issue at the heart of the 2011 Festival<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the year, the Museum passes on the results of local archaeological research to the public, and raises visitors' awareness of the importance of conserving archaeological and historical heritage. The looting of archaeological sites, by destroying the stratigraphic contexts in which objects are found, deprives them of much of their scientific value as witnesses. Illegal intervention in archaeological subsoils is one of the main dangers threatening the world's archaeological heritage. This problem is still little known to the general public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the support of the Swiss Federal Office of Culture, the Festival helped to raise public awareness of these threats, not only on a local scale, but by broadening the perspective to include the world's historical heritage. All the more so as Switzerland is now striving to follow a strict policy in the fight against the effects of site looting, having ratified the 1970 UNESCO Convention in 2003.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best productions were rewarded by a jury of 5 people from both archaeological and film-related backgrounds. An audience prize was also awarded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
