Festival Presentation

A FESTIVAL FOR EVERYONE FOR 25 YEARS

Every two years, the Roman Museum of Nyon organizes the Festival international du film d’archéologie de Nyon (FIFAN), which, over the past 25 years, has become a must-see event in Switzerland for lovers of archaeological cinema.

Since 1999, 13 editions have been held, placing Nyon within the network of major international festivals of this type, alongside Bordeaux, Rovereto, and Athens.

The FIFAN aims to promote archaeology through high-quality films. Serving as a bridge between researchers, filmmakers, and the general public, it stimulates dialogue and encourages reflection on the connections between archaeology and contemporary issues.

In 2025, the festival will renew itself by introducing a selection dedicated to immersive experiences, incorporating technologies such as virtual and augmented reality.

A jury of experts in cinema, immersive technologies, and archaeology will award prizes to the best productions. Several awards will be presented, with the festival actively supporting small production companies by rewarding low-budget productions and promoting their creativity.

IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES

The new Immersive Heritage Experiences section highlights the growing role of immersive technologies, such as virtual reality (VR) and extended reality (XR), in the promotion and preservation of archaeological heritage. In the face of global threats to these treasures—from climate change, conflict, and urbanization—these innovative tools offer a unique way to safeguard, explore, and share history. Through immersive reconstructions, the public can now travel to vanished sites, discover inaccessible monuments, or immerse themselves in ancient civilizations, strengthening the connection between past and future. This selection showcases how technology is becoming an essential ally in protecting and passing on our shared heritage.

SCHOOL OUTREACH PROGRAMME

For the 2025 edition, FIFAN is renewing its partnership with senior secondary schools, as it did in 2023, to offer students an educational and immersive approach to archaeology and cinema. Given that the festival will be held the beginning of the school year, the precise details of this partnership will be defined at a later date.

The goal remains to create a strong connection between young people and the festival through adapted screenings, interactive workshops, and discussions with professionals, while sparking their interest in heritage issues and new technologies. This programme is part of a broader range of events for the general public, including conferences, round tables, and themed events open to all.

PROFESSIONAL MEETINGS: CINEMA, IMMERSION AND ARCHAEOLOGY

FIFAN 2025’s dedicated programme for professionals aims to provide a space for reflection, exchange, and collaboration among those involved in cinema, archaeology, and immersive technologies. Through round tables, conferences, practical workshops, and networking sessions, the programme aims to address contemporary challenges in heritage preservation and promotion. It also explores the potential of digital tools to transform research and dissemination. It also aims to foster synergies between disciplines, support innovation, and strengthen connections among professionals to ensure the more effective transmission of our cultural heritage.

FIFAN 2025 will take place from the 2nd to 7th September 2025.
