Terapixel Panorama of the Battle of Murten

OUT OF COMPETITION

The Terapixel Panorama is a major project of EPFL's Experimental Museology Laboratory (eM+), headed by Professor Sarah Kenderdine. This laboratory is a transdisciplinary initiative at the intersection of immersive visualization technologies, aesthetics and cultural and scientific data (big data).

To scan Panorama of the Battle of Murtenpainting from the 19the Louis Braun's 100 × 10-meter Phase One iXH 150 megapixel camera captured 27,000 ultra-high-resolution images, creating a 1.6 terapixel digital twin. This is the largest image of a physical object ever produced. Recreated in an immersive 360-degree environment, this panorama is augmented by volumetric video, 3D objects, motion capture, a dynamic soundscape and synthetic odors to deliver a multisensory experience.

The project was presented to the public in a series of exhibitions at institutions such as the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich, the Musée de Morat, the Château de Grandson, the Musée d'Histoire de Berne, and other venues around the world.
