In the name of heritage

With Islamist groups in the Sahel and then the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, the world's cultural heritage has paid a heavy price. The ancient sites of Palmyra, Hatra, the museums of Mosul or Raqqa or religious monuments have been reduced to rubble. These attacks have been considered war crimes by the International Criminal Court since 2016, with the conviction of Malian jihadist Ahmad Al Faqi Al Mahdi.

Alongside this moral reparation, the international community is now working to rehabilitate and rebuild the evidence of past civilizations.
