In search of forgotten handwriting

We've all heard of the hieroglyphs of Egypt and the cuneiform script of Mesopotamia as the world's oldest scripts, the ones that ushered mankind into antiquity. Yet at the same time, over 4,000 years ago, another form of writing was developing in southern Iran: linear Elamite. In 2022, a young French archaeologist - François Desset - caused a stir in the world of Assyriology when he succeeded in deciphering a writing system that had been known for over a century, but for which no-one had ever found the key.
